Dar es Salaam, founded on the eastern shores of the Indian Ocean and the largest and richest city in Tanzania, consists of three regions: Kinondoni in the north, Ilala in the middle and Temeke in the south. The city, which has the largest port in the country, is also the center of sea transportation. Dar es Salaam, which means the land of peace in Arabic, is located on the way to Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro. Dar es Salaam, the country's eastern coastal metropolis, is still the economic and political center of the country, even though it relinquished the title of capital to Dodoma in 1970.
Date
Established in the region known as the cradle of humanity, dating back to 10,000 years ago, Tanzania has been the settlement center of Khoisans, Kusitiks, Bantu and Nilotics. Together with Vasco da Gama, who was the first European to reach the African shores in 1498, Portugal established a widespread colony in the region until the arrival of the Omani Arabs in the 18th century. Zangibar, which was the capital during the reign of Oman Sultan Sayyid Said, who dominated the borders from Central Africa to Oman, became the center of the Arab slave trade.
After the Arab, German and British colonies, the Tanganyika African National Union was established in 1961 and with the Zanzibar Revolution in 1963, Zangibar and Tanganyika were merged in 1964, taking the name of today's Tanzania. Even though Tanzania, which had a hard time due to the wrongly implemented socialist regime, fell among the least developed countries in the world and most in need of foreign aid, it is seen that the poverty rate has started to decrease today.
Places to visit
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's most populous city, has a population of Christian, Arab, African, Hindu and Asian origins, of which nearly half are Muslims. Samora Street, the city's most crowded and cosmopolitan street, has shops, banks and currency exchange offices, as well as a dizzying crowd. The Upanga District, where many mosques, temples, cafes and cute shops are located, also houses the 18th century Kundichi Ruins. The Azania Lutheran Church, the most magnificent of the buildings during the German colonial period and completed in 1898, is located in the Kivukoni District and Sokoine Road, where the colonial period buildings are concentrated.
One of the must-see places to trace the history of Tanzania and the history of the region stretching back millions of years is the National Museum. The Village Museum, on the other hand, is an ethnographic, authentic open-air museum where the traditional African lifestyle can be observed and sheds light on Tanzanian culture. Dance and music performances are held for visitors who come here. Another address you can go to to enter the interesting world of the indigenous tribes is the Sukoma Museum.
