Located near Caspian Sea coasts, Baku is one of the most significant crossing points on the historical Silk Road. The capital and the most populous city of Azerbaijan, Baku is preserving its historical heritage in conjunction with modern city life. Green parks, modern buildings, monuments and sculptures, elegant shopping malls, restaurants and cafes… The city where East and West meets is offering diverse alternatives for its visitors.

The most important cultural, commercial, industrial, science and educational center in Azerbaijan, Baku is also housing a busy port near the Caspian Sea. The largest city in Caucasus is located on the southern part of the Absheron Peninsula, well-known for its rich oil reservoirs.


Places to See in Baku

Hosted several civilizations throughout the history, Baku is one of the oldest settlements in the region. The city has many things to offer in terms of places-to-visit in Baku. The city where the past and the future, the modern and the historical are melting, is also housing numerous high-rise buildings- reflecting the modern side of the city. Enabling its visitors to travel back in time, the city center, that is surrounded by historical walls, is housing many archeological founding. During this time travel, the influences of Soviet Union period, Islamic Civilizations and European impressionism are observed together, creating a mixed atmosphere for the city.


Icheri Sheher (the Old City) is the center of Baku. Surrounded by historical walls constructed in 12th. century, the inner city is reflecting the historical heritage of the city. Impressing its visitors with its mixed architectural style from many different periods, the Old City is stretching along Caspian Sea coast.

There are several historical landmarks in the old city including the Synyg Gala Minaret, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and The Maiden Tower (Azerbaijani: Qız Qalası). Constructed in 15th. century, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs with an outstanding architecture was the formal residential place of the Shirvanshah Dynasty. The Maiden Tower, on the other hand, is resembling a shape of ‘Q’ from a top view thanks to the combination of cylindric shape body and a rectangular shape supplement.

The Ateshgah Temple near Surakhani was the holy place of Zoroastrians- the fire worshippers and a resting place for traders travelling on the historical Silk Road. Known as ‘the Temple of Eternal Fire’, the temple is a very impressive religious structure, located 30 km. further from Baku city center.

Among other places in the city that can be seen are; the State Museum of Azerbaijan Carpet and Applied Art in the city center and Nizami Museum of Azerbaijani Literature, which was established in 1939.

Gobustan National Park, officially Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, is housing rock petroglyphs, graveyards, caves, rocks and camps. This interesting complex is located 70 km. further from Baku city center. Well known for its rock petroglyphs and rock engravings, this historic settlement is also internationally famous.

It is quite convenient to travel between Turkey and Baku. To Baku, there are direct flights from Istanbul Ataturk Airport, operated 7 days a week.
