Istanbul, Turkey

The city where Europe meets Asia
The city where Europe meets Asia

Istanbul, Turkey's most important and most special city is like a blue ribbon that separates Europe and Asia from each other. This unique city had spread over both continents over time and is located in a land where eastern and western cultures are blended.

Old town of this archaic city gives a spiritual style to it due to its architectural marvel mosques, aesthetic domes and minarets. Capital to empires, Istanbul has a long and deep-rooted history which gives us the opportunity to witness the traces of many unusual historical layers in the same place.

In this city where cultures are blended, Christianity ruled over for more than a 1000 years and Islam ruled over for more than a 500 years. It hosted many cultures during its long history, from 6th century B.C. to nowadays.  Being the legendary capital of the Byzantines, Romans and Ottomans for sixteen centuries, Istanbul is one of the most touristic destinations of the world with its historical and cultural beauties, deep blue Bosphorus, Islands and historical peninsula.

Bosphorus

Being the capital of Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans respectively, in Istanbul everything you encounter is truly impressive due to thousands years long cultural blending. While churches, palaces, mosques, bazaars bear the traces of past with their thousands years long history; giant skyscrapers, modern shopping malls and spaces reflect the effects of the modern world. This makes Istanbul one of the most colorful cities of the world.

Istanbul was established in northwestern Turkey, along the way of Marmara coast and Bosphorus, in a manner that it encircles Haliç as well. Bosphorus, passing across the city and of course being the most important element of its beauty, divides city into two parts. Reflecting a great magnificence and a pure beauty, both sides of the Bosphorus reveal the legacy of past and present in an impressive manner. Mansions, modern hotels, palace-esque houses, fishing villages, symbolic structures and many more... Best way to explore Bosphorus is to participate in one of the boat tours.

Heart of the trade route between Black sea and Sea of Marmara; blue waters of Marmara shine temptingly in the southern part of Istanbul. This important trade center of old times had had its share abundantly from the unique architecture and urbanism understandings of many different cultures. Due to blending of all these cultural and religious diversities, Istanbul has a unique identity today.  That's why it's one of the 5 top visited cities of the world.

Historical Peninsula

Located between Haliç, the golden horn, Sea of Marmara and fortifications, Historical Peninsula hosts the most beautiful heritages of the city with no doubt. The most important element of Istanbul skyline with its six minarets, The Blue Mosque is the first place to be visited in Istanbul. On the opposite side of this masterpiece mosque, appears Hagia Sofia Church, constructed during the reign of Emperor Justinanus. This magnificent building was used as a mosque in the past but it serves as a museum nowadays.

On another hill, rises the peak of Ottoman architectural art: Suleymaniye Mosque. Another important element of Istanbul skyline, Topkapı Palace greets the beautiful city of Istanbul from a hill above Bosphorus and Marmara. Minimum of half day should be reserved to visit this palace which was the home of Ottoman sultans for 400 years.

Islands

With no doubts, one of the most beautiful places to be visited in Istanbul is the Islands. Islands have no motor vehicle in them except the official cars and that's why they still reveal their beauties without being defeated to concrete. Istanbul Islands, also known as the Prince's Islands, is formed of 8 islands located in the Sea of Marmara. There are regular services to 4 islands with ferries or sea buses departing from Haliç entrance or Kabataş pier. The biggest one of the islands, Büyükada is a must-see place with its big marketplace, historical pier and famous fish restaurants. The second most crowded island after Büyükada, Heybeliada has its roots date back to 1200s. The island has a Clergy School and Aya Triada Monastery and is also suitable for swimming in the summer. Acknowledged as a holiday resort by Istanbulites, Burgazada is a lovely place identified with Turkish story writer Sait Faik. Being the smallest one of the Islands, it is possible to walk from one end of Kınalıada to the other in half an hour. Ayazma Beach is one of the most beautiful places of this island formed of sheer slopes and small bays.

Old holiday resort of sultans Ortaköy is located in the most beautiful place of Bosphorus. Dividing the European side of Istanbul with its long and narrow horn shape, Haliç is one of the most natural harbors of the world. Sarıyer is where Bosphorus meets the Black sea. Üsküdar is the pier to European transition with its 16th century mosques. Dearest of the Anatolian side, Kadıköy is one of the fastest growing districts of the century. Şile is a cute touristic town on the coast of Black sea, 50 km away from Üsküdar. These districts are among the places to be seen in Istanbul.
