Khartoum, the capital and largest city of Sudan, is located on the banks of the Nile River. Date
Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, the largest country in Africa, is connected to Egypt, Port Sudan and al-Ubeyyiz by railways. Founded in 1821 by Albanian soldiers forming the army of Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Pasha, the city takes its name from Al-kartoūm, the Arabic for the shape of the Nile River resembling an elephant trunk. There are embassy buildings, hotels and multinational companies in Khartoum's most famous street, Al Amarat. Located just south of the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers, the city is connected to Egypt, Port Sudan and al-Ubeyyiz by railroads. Khartoum, where the Nile River divides into blue and white, is an important trade and transportation center of the country, where the waterway traffic on the river and the international airport are located.
There are 19 ethnic groups living in Sudan and more than 500 sub-ethnic groups under them. With this diversity, over 100 different languages are spoken. Sufism is also widespread in the country where 70% of the population is Sunni Muslim. Khartoum, which is the 16th country in the world in terms of surface area, is a country where living space is limited due to the desert.
Places to visit
Khartoum, which consists of three cities combined with Omdurman and Bahri, is formed by connecting these cities with a bridge. The city, whose main attractions are Sudan National Museum, Tuti Island, University of Khartoum, Nile Street, Presidential Palace, Al Kabir Mosque, Etnographic Museum, Al Sabalouga, Mogran and Khartoum War Cemetery, is the largest and most modern center of the country with its three-lane roads. In addition to many mosques in the city, there are Catholic, Anglican and Coptic cathedrals along with Greek Orthodox and Maronite churches. There is a long bridge built by a Chinese company over the Blue Nile. Other bridges over the river were brought from India, which was a British colony. Three-wheeled vehicles, which are very common on the streets and have become the symbol of Khartoum traffic, are called raksa.
The Old Mosque, one of the most important structures of the city, and the Mosque Kebir, an example of Ottoman architecture, are the right addresses to start your tour. In the National Museum of Sudan, where pieces unearthed from the excavations around the Nile Valley and the Nubian Desert are exhibited, the most valuable are the murals from the Faras Cathedral, one of the ores of Nubia. It is said that the temples, which were built in accordance with the original in the garden of the museum, were built by Pharaoh Tutmosis the 3rd and Hatshepsut, the first female regent of Ancient Egypt history. Another must-visit museum is Khalifa Abdullahi Khalifat El Mahdi's house converted into a museum. In the building known as Khalifas House, belongings and ethnographic values belonging to the rulers of Sudan in the past are exhibited.
Food & Drink and Shopping
Sudanese local cuisine, which was influenced by the British culture for many years when it was a colony, contains flavors from the cuisines of England, Italy and France. In the country where rice, chicken and lamb are the main foodstuffs, kisra, maschi, bamia bamia and cream caramel are the flavors you must taste. Their main drink is tabrihana, a non-alcoholic beverage. In addition, local Sudanese coffees are also quite delicious with their unique aromas.
Papa Costas and Liwan Al Dimashi are among the restaurants where you can reach traditional tastes in Khartoum. Apart from these, it is also possible to reach local tastes in street restaurants. Mostly chicken and fish dishes are served in restaurants on the banks of the Nile. There are also restaurants serving Turkish, Indian and Lebanese dishes in the city. The people of Khartoum very often consume a dish called ful, which is made from crushed broad beans or beans. It is not surprising to see mobile tea vendors and women selling snacks like roasted peanuts and watermelon seeds on the streets and alleys of Khartoum.
Do not miss out on the Khartoum markets and street stalls, which are quite fun for shopping, because bags and wallets made of crocodile skin are very cheap. Ostrich eggs decorated with carvings, African arrows, spears and different authentic figurines are among the souvenirs to be bought. Afra Mall and Waha Mall are the city's shopping centers.
