Baghdad, which was established near the ruins of cities such as Babylon, Seleucia and Medain, which were world-famous centers of ancient civilization, was a small city connected to the Sassanids in the pre-Islamic period. It was conquered during the reign of Caliph Omar and developed in terms of trade during the reign of the four caliphs, and militarily during the Umayyads, and served as the capital of the Abbasids. Tugrul Bey, who took the city in 1055, established the first university, but the city was devastated by the Mongol and Timur invasions. Especially during the Mongol invasion that lasted for two centuries, many science books of the Baghdad Library were burnt to pieces and this caused the destruction of many works of art. After the Karakoyunlu and Akkoyunlu, Suleiman the Magnificent and IV. Murat fought nonstop with the Safavids who attacked the city. The city, which was in the hands of the Ottomans until World War I, was occupied by the British and became the capital of the Kingdom of Iraq, and this situation was officially accepted by Turkey with the Treaty of Lausanne signed in 1923. Lastly, the city, which was the scene of the Gulf War in 2003, experienced the American occupation and is still under the control of the coalition forces led by the United States and the United Kingdom.
