Located on the northern Mesopotamia in Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey, Diyarbakır has its history dates back to 7000 BC. Places to Visit in Diyarbakır

With its deep rooted history, Diyarbakır is quite lucky in terms of places to visit. One of the first stops of the visitors is Diyarbakır Walls located in the city center. Known as the 2nd longest wall structure of the world after Chinese Walls, these historical walls are 5.5 km long ad 7-8 meters high.

Surrounding Diyarbakır all over, Diyarbakır Walls is among the most impressive historical artifacts of the city. There're 6 entrances and 16 castles on the walls. Being one of the most important artifacts that survived from Middle Ages to our century, inscriptions and relieves can be observed on the outer surface of the walls. You should spare sometime to truly see the walls which front you almost in every corner of the city while you're walking around.

Located 3 km west from Mardin door, On Gözlü Bridge is one of the most glorious structures of Diyarbakır. Known with 4 different names as On Gözlü, Dicle, Silvan and Mervani; this bridge is thought to be built in 6th century.

Gazi Mansion or with its real name Semanoğlu Mansion, is a good place to take a rest in the city with the view of On Gözlü Bridge. Built by Akkoyunlar in 15th century this mansion was also used as headquarter during WW1. Bought and gifted to Atatürk by the municipality in the year of 1935, this mansion has iwans in both of its floors. Exhibiting personal belongings, documents and photographs of Atatürk, garden of the mansion is also used as a day room.

Enlightening the Anatolian history, Çayönü Mound is located in Sesveren Pınarı Village of Ergani County. This ancient city where ruins of Middle Ages can be observed has its history dating back to 7000 BC. Üçtepe located in Bismil County also draws attentions of archeology and history lovers.

Malabadi Bridge in Silvan is known as the stone bridge with biggest cone of the world. Main inspiration of many songs and stories, this bridge is one of the touristic symbols of the area.

Located on the Ziya Gökalp Boulevard in the city center, Diyarbakır Museum, Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı and Archeology Museum are among the places which worth a visit. Bearing the traces of Seljuk and Artuq eras; inns, caravanserais, baths and bridges are among the most important cultural artifacts of Diyarbakır.

One of the oldest mosques of Anatolia, Ulu Mosque and one of the oldest schools of Anatolia, Mesudiye Medresesi are must see places.

Having many caves due to its landforms, Diyarbakır has an important potential in terms of speleological tourism. Lice Bırkleyn Cave, Ergani Hilar Cave and Silvan Hasuni Cave are the most visited ones.

In Diyarbakır city center where authentic handicrafts and local ateliers can be found, arts such as jewelry making, coppersmith, sericulture, rug and carpet weaving, saddlebag making are still alive.

Diyarbakır Cuisine

Diyarbakır has one of the richest cuisines of the Southeastern Anatolian Region. Watermelon is one the first delights that comes to mind in Diyarbakır. Known by the world, Diyarbakır watermelon differs from others with its size and taste.

Meat is the main ingredient of Diyarbakır cuisine. Liver Kebab (Ciğer Kebabı) is the most known Diyarbakır food. Grills and kebabs accompanied by eggplants and tomatoes are quite famous. Meftune made with eggplant and other vegetables is also quite mentioned in Diyarbakır. Rib meal, steak tartar a la turca (Çiğ Köfte), içli köfte, burma kadayıf, sütlü Nuriye and meyan kökü are among the delights that must be tasted.
