Date

It is not known exactly when the city was founded BC. It is known to have been founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century. BC in the First Punic War between Rome and Carthage. In 263, Catania accepted the administration of the Roman Republic and was known as a wealthy and prosperous city until the 4th century. With the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Byzantines recaptured the city in 535. Until the 9th century, Catania lived under the rule of the Byzantine Empire. In the 700s, when Sicily was the target of Arab attacks, the coasts of the island completely passed into the hands of the Muslims. At the beginning of the 19th century, Catania was at the forefront of those who wanted Sicily to gain freedom. Historically, the economic and social infrastructure lagging behind Northern Italy and the social importance of the mafia in Sicily created great problems for Catania. Despite its large population, Catania has made a name for itself as the only major city in Italy without a regional center. However, in the 21st century, the politicians of "Forza Italia", who were involved in the political administration of the city by getting involved in the problems, also made a great contribution.

Places to visit

Catania, the second largest city of Sicily, is a favorite holiday destination with the Mediterranean Sea to the east and Mount Etna to the west, with its untouched nature and fun daily life. Small mountain villages, golden beaches and a wonderful holiday awaits you. The first colony settlement around Mount Etna, which started in 729, bears traces of Greek culture. Like other Sicilian cities, Catania was culturally influenced as it was ruled by Romans, Arabs and Normans.

On the other hand, Catania, which is said to have died in the volcanic eruption of Etna Volcano in 1669, was rebuilt as a modern city. Etna Volcano, Europe's largest and most active volcano, is a mountain mass reaching 3330 meters in height and rising between Catania and Taormina. It has been forbidden to climb to the top since it last erupted in 2002.

The Piazza del Duomo, the square in the very center of Catania, has been included in the Unesco list with its Baroque-style buildings around it. Fontana dell'Elefante, located right in the middle of the square, is the most famous monumental structure of the city. Every year in February, commemoration ceremonies are held in Basilica Cattedrale Sant'Agata, located in Piazza del Duomo Square. On Via Vittoria Emanuele, it is possible to bury the Teatro Romano and the Odeon, which are the best preserved Roman ruins in Catania.

If you have time, we recommend visiting Taormina in the north, Augusta, Bronte, Adrano in the south and Misterbianco in the west. Museo Civico Belliniano is a museum dedicated to the memory of Sicily's most famous composer, Vincenzo Bellini. Chiesa di San Benedetto Church, Museo Storico dello Sbarco, Etnaland with entertainment and playground, Teatro Massimo Bellini, Caltagirone Ceramic Center, Randozza and Linguaglossa are among the places you must see.

Food & Drink and Shopping

Catania cuisine, which is not different from the rest of Sicily, offers flavors shaped by Italian and Mediterranean food culture. Seafood, olive oil, cheese and wine come to the fore in dishes that are as delicious as they are healthy. Apart from that, there are quite a lot of pizza and pasta restaurants like everywhere in Italy. The main specialties of the cafes and restaurants in the city center and around Etna Street are eggplant-based salads, fried rice balls, light desserts and ice cream.

Known as Sicily's Milan, Catania is a shopper's paradise. Paintings of Catania artists, handcrafted products and cute shops attract the appreciation of tourists. If you want to buy something local, Sicilian puppet called pupi and woodwork, special handcrafted jewelery and antique shops from the shops on Via Etnea are a good choice. Apart from that, addresses such as Pescgheria, Via Pacini, Via Umberto, Fuoco del Etna are shopping areas.
