Turkestan
Turkestan, located in the southwest of Kazakhstan, is close to the Seyhun River. Turkestan, the historical and cultural center of Central Asia, is also famous as the place where Ahmet Yesevi lived. Under the influence of Ahmet Yesevi, it became a center of Islamic education and spiritual development for the people of the Kazakh steppe. The city was declared as the "Spiritual Capital of the Turkic World" at the Turkic Council summit held on March 31, 2021. Turkestan draws attention with its historical richness, whose archaeological history dates back to the 4th century. The city was also the capital of the Kazakh Khanate for a period.
Places to Visit in Turkestan
Tomb of Hoca Ahmet Yesevi: The tomb, one of the most spiritually important structures of Turkestan, is dedicated to the famous Turkish poet and Sufi thinker Ahmet Yesevi. It was built by Timur in 1389 during the Great Timurid Empire. Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Tomb is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Hazrat Sultan Museum-Reserve: Azret Sultan Museum, established in 1978, was reorganized in 1989. 25 thousand valuable works are exhibited in the complex, which includes Ahmet Yesevi Tomb, Rabiga Sultan Begim Tomb, Hilvet Underground Mosque and ancient bath.
Mausoleum of Arystan Bab: According to a legend, Timur ordered a mosque to be built where Ahmet Yesevi's grave is located; but all attempts ended in failure. Timur was told that in order to achieve success in his dream, he must first build a mausoleum on the grave of the Sufi Arystan Baba. Thereupon, a mausoleum was built over the grave dating from the 12th century. The tomb was destroyed in the earthquake in the 18th century; but it was repaired and restored over time.
