The name had been transformed into Prusa and later, had been referred as Bursa due to the adaptation to Turkish language. The city, referred as Mysia in documents of Homeros, had been ruled by Roman and Byzantine Empires. In Bursa, the home for over 2000 cultural and historical artifacts and edifices, influences of Byzantine and Ottoman Empires as well as the Republican Period is still present. Since the city was the first capital of Ottoman Empire, it has many architectural buildings that belong to early periods of Ottoman Empire compare to other Anatolian towns. The architectural style is the synthesis of Islamic and Turkish architecture.

Starting with the governance of Orhan Gazi, the second ruler of Ottoman Empire, the city had developed outside of its citadel. Many historical buildings had been constructed during that period, forming the core of the city today; a school, a hospital, a bridge, a public soup-kitchen, a caravanserai and a public Turkish Bath. However, the historical treasures of the city is not limited with those since it also has several mosques, Islamic-ottoman social complexes, tombs, public houses, madrassahs, poorhouses and covered Turkish bazaars.

The Grand Mosque of Bursa, constructed in 1400 by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I, is one of the oldest mosques in Turkish-Islamic world. The mosque, which is a symbol of the city, is considered as the fifth most important mosque in the Islamic world, after the mosques in Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem and Damascus. The construction of Green Mosque (Yeşil Cami), a part of Green Social Complex (Yeşil Külliye), had started during the governance of Mehmed, I and had been completed under the rule of Murad, II. Green Tomb (Yeşil Türbe), located next to the mosque, is the graveyard of Mehmed, I.
