Established between the coast of Black sea and the mountains of Zigana, Trabzon is the 2nd biggest city of the Black sea Region. Being the most important city of Eastern Blacksea with its 4000 years old history, Trabzon bears the traces of Persian, Byzantine and Roman civilizations.

Places to Visit in Trabzon

Trabzon and its districts are quite rich in terms of places to visit. One of the first places that comes to mind when it comes to places to visit in Trabzon is Sümela Monastery located in Altındere Village. Located on a 300 meters high hillside, this monastery is also called Meryemana. The monastery can be visited as a museum under the supervision of Culture and Tourism Ministry and there're stone church, kitchen, visitor saloon, library, holy shrine and student halls inside the monastery. Reached by a narrow and long way, monastery leaves a different effect on its visitors with its impressive structure.

Used as a museum nowadays, Hagia Sofia church was constructed between years 1238 and 1263. The section describing Adam and Eve is considered as the most impressive part of the church. Among the churches, mosques and monasteries that must be seen in Trabzon are Vazelon Monastery, Saint Anna Church, Yenicuma Mosque, Santa Maria Church, Ortahisar Mosque, Irena Castle, Kaymaklı Monastery and Kızlar Monastery.

Trabzon Museum on Zeytinlik Boulevard in city center, Cevdet Sunay Museum in Ataköy and Atatürk Mansion in Soğuksu are some of Trabzon's museums. Located around Düzköy, Çalköy is one of the most beautiful caves of the region and is 1050 meters high above sea.

Decorating postcards and calendar pages, Uzungöl is in Çaykara region, 99 km away from Trabzon.  Surrounded by spruce trees, the lake was formed when the soils accumulated due to landslides blocked the Haldizen River. Sera, Çakır and Balıklı lakes are other lakes of the city. In Trabzon where you can witness handicrafts, local music and local culture; saddlebags, baskets, sericulture products, Sürmene knifes, churns, belts, fabrics, socks, filigrees and wooden spoons are among the traditional products.

Horon, folk dance of eastern black sea coastal region, and kemençe, small three-stringed local violin, are integral parts of Trabzon and Black Sea culture.

Hustle never ends in the bazaars of Trabzon which was a trade harbor through the history. There're plenty of options in Kemeraltı Bazaar from silver filigree, gold bracelets to copperwares.

What to Eat in Trabzon

Having the richest cuisine of Eastern Black sea; Laz pie, Hamsiköy rice pudding, Sürmene pita, Akçaabat meatballs, Kalkanoğlu rice, Trabzon bread, Savoy cabbage soup, kuymak, kaygana, anchovy bread are the main local dishes of Trabzon. Famous with its anchovy bread, Trabzon is known for its corn, cabbage, bean, potato dishes and pickle and pita.
