While it was previously a region of the Kokand Khanate, it became a province of the Bukhara Khanate in 1810 and the Russian Empire in 1864. The historical process of the city, which was named Chernyaev in 1914, including the invasions of Genghis Khan, Timur, the Dzungar conquerors, the Kokand and Bukhara khanates and the Russian Empire, ended with the name Shymkent in 1924. While it was the most important city of the region in the fields of zinc, karakul sheep, horse, textile and pharmacy until the 1930s during the Soviet period, it is still among the leading cities of Kazakhstan in the cement, chemical industry, food and manufacturing industry.
