BC as the oldest settlement in Kazakhstan in the excavations. Shymkent, with ruins dating back to the 7th century, was founded in the 12th century, 10 km east of the city of Sayram on the Silk Road. While it was previously a region of the Kokand Khanate, it became a province of the Bukhara Khanate in 1810 and the Russian Empire in 1864. The historical process of the city, which was named Chernyaev in 1914, including the invasions of Genghis Khan, Timur, the Dzungar conquerors, the Kokand and Bukhara khanates and the Russian Empire, ended with the name Shymkent in 1924. It is also called Shymkent and Shymkent due to the difference in dialect in Kazakh and Uzbek.
Shymkent Attractions
Geographically, established in the Sayram River valley in Southern Kazakhstan, its climate is milder than the country and it is also known as one of the warmest places in Kazakhstan. It is known that Shymkent, one of the oldest cities in Kazakhstan, was founded on the historical silk road for the accommodation of small caravans. The city, which maintains this passageway feature in train stations and road traffic today, was considered one of the most important trade centers in Timurlenk time. While it was the most important city of the region in the fields of zinc, karakul sheep, horse, textile and pharmacy until the 1930s during the Soviet period, it is still among the leading cities of Kazakhstan in the cement, chemical industry, food and manufacturing industry.
For those who will go to visit the historical Turkestan and Otrar region, Shymkent is one of the most important places to stay as it is a center. Abay Park and Ken-Baba, an ethnographic park, are especially popular with children. The Museum of Victims of Political Repression and Exile, which was opened in 2001 and contains the repressions of the Soviet era and the cultural elements of Kazakhstan that were erased from memory in this process, should be visited. The Shymkent Mosque, which has Uzbek architectural features, is one of the most important structures of the city with its rectangular structure, its large dome with a geometric pattern and shining like gold. Although Shymkent does not stand out much as a tourism city, it has a vibrant life cycle. Shymkent is also the starting point for the famous Aksu Natural Reserve Area. Aksu Reserve, created in 1926, is the first protected natural area of Central Asia. Located on the western arms of the Tien Shan Mountains rising to a height of 3,000 meters, the reserve has about 500 species of living things and about 1,700 plant species. Of course, Kazakh horses are the most suitable vehicle for exploration in the area where creatures such as mountain goats, weasels, wild boars, vultures, gazelles, hawks and eagles can be observed in their natural habitats. A snow leopard, a red bear, or a lynx may be walking nearby as you admire the sunset, away from the bustle of modern life. In the natural park where you feel yourself in a vast world, your eyes enjoy the green.
While you've been to Shymkent, don't leave without seeing Sayram, which is located near the city. Located on the slopes of the Sayram Mountains, Sayram was founded on the banks of the Sayram River, which originates from this mountain and bears the same name.
