Considered one of the cities with the deepest history in the Middle East, Urmia was taken by the Qajar ruler Muhammed Hasan Khan Kaçar in 1756 and after his death, it was captured by the Afşar Bey, Feth Ali Han Afşar. The city, which came under the rule of the Zend Dynasty in 1759 as a result of the seven-month siege of Kerim Khan Zend, faced the uprising of the Afshars of Urmia once the dynasty disappeared. During the Russo-Iranian war in 1828, Urmia, which was occupied by Russian forces for months, was administered by Nacaf-Kulu Khan Afşar for a while during the absence of the governor.
