Ağrı, known as Karakilise, Ararat, Şorbulak, and Karaköse, is an ancient city in the Eastern Anatolia Region, which has been the subject of legends where warm people live despite having a cold climate.
Ağrı, which is on the transition route during the entry of tribes from Central Asia to Anatolia, has hosted many civilizations, but since it was used as an entrance gate, a rooted civilization could not be established here.
After the Hittites who first established dominance in the region, Ağrı, which was under the rule of many nations from Hurrians to Medes and Persians, from Alexander the Great to Armenians, Byzantines and Mongols until the 1400s, was ruled by Karakoyuns and immediately after Yavuz. It passed into the hands of the Ottomans with Sultan Selim. The province was named Ağrı due to Mount Ararat, which is Turkey's highest mountain with a height of 5,137 meters.
Places to visit
Ağrı has many historical and cultural assets as well as natural beauties. So much so that it is believed that the place where Noah's ark, mentioned in the legends, landed is Ağrı and its surroundings. Therefore, in the west, this region is known as Ararat.
İshak Pasha Palace, which was built on a high hill overlooking Eski Beyazıt and the plain, 7 kilometers southeast of Doğubayazıt District, is the second organizational palace after the Topkapı Palace in the Ottoman period. The construction of the palace, which is worth seeing with its magnificent architectural structure, monumental crown gates and harem seat, began in 1784 and lasted for about 100 years. The palace, which is actually a complex, is one of the works of the Tulip period and one of the places to see in Ağrı. One of the most visited structures in Ağrı is the Ahmedi Hani Tomb. It is located 8 kilometers from Doğubayazıt and above the İshak Pasha Palace.
Located 5 kilometers east of Doğubeyazıt, the area where Doğubeyazıt Castle is located is considered an ancient city and there are ruins from the Urartian period around it. Right next to the castle, the Old Beyazıt Mosque with its central dome and single minaret is worth seeing, with its walls, mihrab and arches, and the simplicity of its construction.
Hamur Vault, one of the most interesting examples of Ottoman tomb architecture, is located in the middle of the cemetery in the town center, dominating the valley. It has a unique feature in Turkish-Islamic mausoleum architecture and resembles Kırşehir Aşık Paşa Tomb in terms of its plan. The tombstone decorations in the tomb are almost a living history with Seljuk and Ottoman influences.
Again, 5 kilometers from Doğubeyazıt, the Urartian Castle contains Urartian tombs, architectural remains from ancient times, caves and a temple. If you want to see the castles and historical buildings in the surrounding districts while you are in Kars: Tokluca, Diyadin, Avnik and Kuje Castles in and near Diyadin district center are worth seeing. You can visit Kızılziyaret Castle near Balıklıgöl, Küpkıran (Harebegöl) Castle 20 kilometers from the center, Pazi Castle built on a hill overlooking the Ağrı Plain, and Toprakkale, which is thought to belong to the Urartians, and the Toprakkale Mosque nearby. Apart from these, Havaran, Şoşik, Karlıca Kız, Kan and Zencir are other important castles of Ağrı.
There are also many ancient cities and mounds in Ağrı that bear the traces of the Urartu period. If you want to visit and see, the main ones are Diyadin Meya Village, Girik Tepe, Toprakkale and Eski Beyazıt.

Mount Ararat, Turkey's highest mountain and believed to have run aground on Noah's Ark, has a special importance as it is mentioned in the holy books. The mountain, which is quite majestic and magnificent, where the snow on its summit does not melt for 4 seasons, makes it impossible to see its summit. Especially on the way from Doğubayazıt to Iğdır, you cannot pass without photographing the magnificent view on the road.
Another natural wonder is the Ice Cave on the Doğubayazıt Gürbulak road. It is a natural monument cave located on the same lava tunnel system as the meteor pit, about 3 kilometers northeast of Hallaç Village, on the southern foot of the Little Ararat Mountain. As you descend into the cave, an impressive cold air hits your face. In fact, the cave, which has a changing weather according to the seasons, freezes the water dripping from above and turns it into ice with the effect of the air current. The shards of ice that shimmer like crystals and change color when lit up are incredibly astonishing.
