Nuremberg, which is part of the German state of Bavaria, is the second largest city in the state after Munich and is considered the industrial capital.
Established on both sides of the 115 km long Pegnitz River, Nuremberg also has the distinction of being the city where German kings were crowned in history, which stands out with its world-class music festivals and museums, where you can catch the taste of the middle ages while walking around its streets.
Date
It is not known exactly when it was founded, and Nuremberg was one of the three most important cities of the Roman Empire, which lived its golden age in the 15th and 16th centuries. Ninety percent of the city, one of Germany's first industrial centers, was destroyed within an hour during World War II. Despite the rapid rebuilding and restoration of historical buildings after the war, many imperial monuments from the Middle Ages have disappeared. Today, it has become the center of economy and trade and hosts millions of visitors as a city where the biggest fairs are held every year.
Places to visit
Kaiserburg Castle, the symbol of Nuremberg, is one of the most important structures of the Roman Empire period. The castle, where the king's rooms and some belongings of those years are located, lived its brightest period between 1050 and 1571.
Located in the old town square, the other historical structure of the city, Weisser Turm is a tower built in 1250 and restored after World War II. The Ehekarussell Fountain, built in front of it in 1981, is another important symbol of Nuremberg, depicting a marriage that resulted in death.
Frauenkirche Church, a Gothic and Hellenistic building, was created in 1355 by converting an old synagogue into a church. Other sacred historical structures of Nuremberg are St. Elizabeth, St. Sebald, St. Egidian, St. Clara, St. Jacob and St. Lorenz churches and basilicas. The Handwerkerhof, on the other hand, is just opposite the big train station, which is surrounded by the old town castle and towers, especially where handicrafts are found.
Nuremberg, which has many museums such as the Albrecht Dürer House Museum, the Toy Museum, which is a very comprehensive museum, the New Art and Design Museum, the German National Museum, the Traffic Museum, the Industry Museum, the Museum Tucher Mansion and the DB Railway Museum, also stands out with its music festivals. It hosts tens of thousands of visitors by hosting many of Europe's largest and oldest festivals and Open Air.
Food & Drink and Shopping
Nürnberger Lebkuchen, which is a kind of Christmas cake and also called honey cookies, is a registered flavor unique to Nuremberg. Discovered by Franconian monks in the 13th century, the flavor contains citrus, honey, eggs and a very high percentage of hazelnuts, walnuts, cinnamon, honey, cardamom and coriander. The original recipe of the cake, which is known in many European countries and especially baked in December, is hidden. The place where you can taste the best is Christkindlesmarkt.
Bratwurst is a kind of German sausage made from pork. Large sausages cooked on a charcoal barbecue are placed between smaller pieces of bread and a delicious flavor is created with ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard. It is recommended to consume these sausages, which fascinate even those who do not like fast food, offal and even pork, with beer.
Shopping in Nuremberg's old city center is very enjoyable. Because the walking path, which was renovated in 1996, has the distinction of being one of the largest streets in Europe.
There are many luxury boutiques, shopping centers, shops and arcades in the old city center of the city and on Kaisser Street. While you can find artistic products and souvenirs in the Handwerkhof area, you can find more affordable souvenirs around the Lorenz Church. If you are going to be in Nuremberg during the Christmas period, let us remind you that Europe's most famous Christmas market is set up in this city. You may have the opportunity to try the Christkindlesmarkt mulled wine.
