Turkmenbashi, formerly Krasnovodsk, located in Turkmenistan, the Central Asian Turkic republic that gained its independence with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, is located in the country's Balkan province. Turkmenbashi, an important port city on the shores of the Caspian Sea, is home to Azeri, Russian and Armenian minorities.
Date
Founded in 1869 as Kızılsu, Türkmenbaşı took its name from the red flow of the river that spilled into the sea at the place where the city was founded, taking the color of the soil of the region. The name of Turkmenbashi, the city where the Russians first penetrated into Turkmenistan, was changed to Krasnovodsk, which means Red Water in Russian. Turkmen leader Saparmurat Niyazov, who changed the names of cities across the country after his independence in 1991, gave the city the name Turkmenbashi, which he sometimes uses as his surname.
Places to visit
In Turkmenistan, which has one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, water, natural gas and electricity have been distributed free of charge since the presidency of Saparmurat Türkmenbaşı. The country is cautious about foreign capital. Turkmenistan is a country where the Turkish language lives in its purest form, where women dress in colors to outshine men, whose streets are clean, museums and historical buildings are well-maintained, and approximately 90% of Turkmenistan is covered with deserts. On the other hand, in the green cities, there are no beggars because it is prohibited. Although the number of schools in the city is small, the number of school attendees and the literacy rate are almost 100%.
Everything is very cheap in the country and everyone has their own vineyard orchard. Smoking is prohibited in restaurants or outdoor areas outside the homes. Another interesting thing is the lack of credit cards and ATMs in the country. Maybe you wanted to marry a Turkmen woman, all of them more beautiful than the other, unfortunately you have to wait until you are 30 years old or you pay a serious amount to the state.
In Turkmenistan, the only country with a horse ministry, there is even a Turkmen proverb that says "get up in the morning and see your horse, see your father after your horse". For the Turkmen, the horse meant a soul mate. Before the Russian occupation of 1917, almost all Turkmen families had at least two horses, while in the socialist system, horses were raised on state farms. Some families fled to Iran and Afghanistan in order not to give up their horses. Horse breeding became a national art once again, with the country gaining independence in 1991. Unlike Kazakhs and Uzbeks, Turkmens do not eat horse meat. Currency is Turkmen Manat and 14 thousand Manat is equivalent to about 1 Dollar. Although Turkish Airlines has daily flights from Istanbul to Ashgabat, getting a visa is difficult.
In the city, where the temperature is between 6-10 degrees even in December, Tuesdays are a public holiday. For this reason, almost all the shops close at 16-16:30 on Mondays. The sand of the city, which is mostly desert, is first class beach sand. Although it looks incredible when it rains, of course it dries immediately. And of course, the residents of the city are very friendly and hospitable, when they realize that you are Turkish, they immediately invite you to their homes and offer you something.
Eating and drinking
Turkmen cuisine is certainly not foreign to us. The main dishes are ravioli, known as khonim pastry, samsa, a type of pastry, rice, strained yogurt, ayran, lentil soup, noodles and skewers. On the other hand, all kinds of ravioli, from zucchini, potatoes, spinach and wild herbs, are arranged in a colander, steamed and served with a bowl of yoghurt. Hanım Böreği is a large ravioli in the form of a roll. Their salads are made with pickles and strained yoghurt added to very finely chopped wild herbs. The most popular of the most consumed pilaf is the Turkmen pilaf with carrots, grapes and meat, which is similar to the Uzbek pilaf. Another feature of this rice is that it is cooked with cottonseed oil. There are varieties of bread and pita with chickpeas, sesame, onions and black cumin, which they bake in a tandoor or oven by adding milk or water. Their desserts are mostly halva, Şekerpare and pâtisserie. Ayran made from camel meat, camel milk, horse milk and horse milk is both very popular and delicious.
