Sukkur

Located in Pakistan's Sindh province, Sukkur is located on the west bank of the Indus River and directly opposite the historic city of Rohri. The city is the third largest city in Sindh after Karachi and Hyderabad and the 14th largest city in Pakistan in terms of population. While under British rule, it was known as the "Gate of Sindh" in ancient times, along with the Sukkur hill and the hill on the Bukkur river island.

The economic development of the city is largely dependent on agricultural products from Sindh farms. Thanks to its geographical location, the city is also one of the important settlements of Pakistan as a center for trade and processing of agricultural products. In addition, the shipbuilding industry also plays an important role in the city's economy. Connected to other cities and districts of Pakistan by rail, the city also attracts many industries such as metalworking and cement production. The name Sukkur derives from the historically abundant sugarcane plantations in the area. Although there is no clear information, the name of the city was formed from the word shakkar, which means "sugar" in Arabic. According to another belief, Suukh, which means "comfort" in Sindhi, formed the name of the city.

Sukkur was once built as a small village during the British rule, directly opposite the historic city of Rohri. The British established a military garrison here in 1839 and this garrison was abandoned in 1845. However, Sukkur continued to increase its importance as a trade center and managed to develop. Sukkur Municipality was established in 1862. The population of the city began to decline as most of the Hindu population migrated back to India. Sukkur, like other Sindh districts, was not affected by the uprisings in Punjab and Bengal. Many bridges, islands and central buildings that allowed the region to be used as a trade center in ancient times have survived to the present day.
