Zaporizhia, located on the banks of the Dnieper River in the southeast of Ukraine, is the administrative center of the Zaporozhye Province and one of the touristic cities of Ukraine. Zaporizhia, the 6th largest city of Ukraine, was founded in 1770 with the walls built by Alexandrivska to protect the borders of the Russian Empire from Turks and Tatars. An important railway center and river port, Zaporizhia stretches for miles along the Dnieper River, with a green belt separating industrial and residential areas. Archaeological finds in the region indicate that the oldest Turkish community settled here 3000 years ago is thought to be the Scythians. Over time, the Scythians were replaced by Khazars, Pechenegs, Cumans, Tatars and Eastern Slavs. The history of the city, originally named Alexandrovsk, is connected with the construction of a new Dnieper River protection line between Zaporizhia and Berdyansk in the late 18th century. Alexandrovsk became an important transport hub at the end of the 18th century, as the construction materials needed for the construction of the Kherson and Black Sea fleet were transported through the town. The city, which became an important industrial center at the end of the Russian Revolution, became a symbol of industrialization throughout Soviet Russia. In 1939, the city became the center of the newly formed Zaporozhian oblast. Today, the center of heavy industry, aluminum and chemical industry, the city is Ukraine's fourth and the world's 54th largest steel producer.

The Cathedral of Protection of the Blessed Virgin, which was built in 1778 and is one of the symbols of the city, was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in the 20th century, but was restored and reopened in 2011. With a height of 36 meters, the building is one of the most valuable structures in the city. The baroque St Andrew's Cathedral, built in 2001, is a modern architectural monument. Today, regular church services are held in the cathedral building. The 550 m long and 54 m high Preobrazhenskiy Bridge was an architectural masterpiece in the 1950s when it was built. The bridge, which consists of four arches, has a railway line.

One of the places worth seeing in the city is the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, which was built between 1927-1939. The station, which is the only facility in Ukraine located in the heart of the city, continues to maintain its impressiveness. The best view of the dam is the Zaporozhian Cossacks History Museum.

The remains of the ship, whose hull was removed from the depths of the Dnieper River in 1998, were restored and opened to visitors, and the Kazakh ship Chaika sank in 1739.
