Transportation from Kualanamu Airport to Medan City Center
Kualanamu International Airport, also known by the code KNO, is the country's second largest airport located in the North Sumatera Region of Indonesia.
The fact that there is direct access to the airport by train makes it very easy to transfer to the city center. There are 40 reciprocal flights a day between Kuala Namu Airport and Medan Airport Train Station, and the train takes you to the city center in 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the time you board. The ticket fee can be paid online from the company's website, or it can be paid in cash or by credit card at the ticket office. You can find the current timetable on the official website of the railway.
DAMRI minibuses are the most economical way to go to the city center. When you exit the airport gate and turn right, you will see the DAMRI ticket office. You can buy your ticket from here and get on these shuttles that run between the airport and the city center. These minibuses depart every 15 minutes between 05.00 and 23.00. The distance is 40 km and the journey takes about 60 to 90 minutes.
You can also take a taxi from the airport for this journey. Taxis that are allowed to carry passengers have a sticker on their windows showing this. For your safety, make sure that the taxi you take has this sticker. The journey takes between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the traffic situation. Considering that the fare increases proportionally when the traffic is very heavy, taxis are no longer an economical option.
There is no Uber in Indonesia, but Grab and Gojek fill that gap very well. Both applications are cheaper than the taxi option, but if you come across a congested traffic, it is possible to pay a higher price. However, if you are traveling as a large group, it may be even more economical than the Grab/Gojek train option.
