Santiago, the capital and largest city of Chile, a South American country, is within the borders of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Consisting of 32 administrative districts, the city is the political and economic center of Chile. Located in the valley bed on the banks of the Rio Mapocho River, Santiago is considered the center of Chile in terms of cosmopolitan, economic, cultural and political aspects, as it is the largest city surrounded by the Andes Mountains.

To the world, Chile means Santiago. It is such a modern and friendly city with its young and dynamic population, vibrant life, entertainment venues, restaurants, glittering streets and luxury shops. With its natural beauties and geography suitable for nature sports, Santiago is preferred for many activities such as climbing, trekking, hot springs and skiing.

Date

Founded by Pedro de Valdivia on February 12, 1541, Santiago's founding ceremony was held on Santa Lucía Hill, which is a park in the city center today. The reason Valdivia chose this place is because the Mapocho River has created a large island here. In the city where the first buildings were built by the Picunche natives, a southern branch of the river was dried and a boulevard called Alameda de las Delicias was built here. Called "Alameda" by the people of Santiago, the street's current name is "Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins." Unfortunately, on May 13, 1647, a heavy earthquake devastated the city, killing 12,000 people. In the plain south of the city, on April 5, 1818, the Chilean forces under the command of Bernardo O'Higgins defeated the Spanish at the Battle of Maipú and gained the country's independence.

In the 1930s, the city began to transform into a modern industrial metropolis. With the Friendship Agreement signed in 1926, Chile became the first country to recognize the Republic of Turkey. Atatürk's relief and high school are located on the main streets of Santiago. The article below the Atatürk Relief, which is one of the leading monuments built by the Santiago Municipality in different corners of the city in order to respect the people who shape the world and to take them as an example, reads: "The founder of the Turkish Republic, the devoted and loyal servant of his homeland, the unique hero, is a living example of the ideal of humanity. He dedicated his whole life to the Turkish Nation and gave it his own soul, his fire. His memory lives on as an unquenchable torch that keeps the spirit of his nation on fire." In Santiago, Pablo Neruda's hometown, there are also the shirt that Nazım Hikmet gave as a gift to Neruda, and the original Spanish poem of Neruda's poem "A Fall Wreath for Nazım" written to Nazım Hikmet.

Places to visit

With its different architecture and colorful buildings, Santiago has a regular city planning and draws the image of a European city. The Cathedral Metropolitana, in its largest square, Plaza de Armas, is one of the old buildings of the city that still stands, despite being damaged by the earthquake. The church, which took 240 years to build, was built with a mixture of gothic, baroque and neoclassical architectural styles. Its two towers have 16 bells, the largest of which weighs 12 tons. Next to the church are the Municipalidad and Correo Central. Located on a parallel street, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a magnificent building and was previously used as the Chilean Parliament.

Right next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there is the Palace of Justice and opposite Chileno de Arte Precolombino, which traces the 4500-year-old civilizations. The modern and rich face of the city shows itself in Providencia and Las Condes. In the region where stylish streets, shopping malls, luxury hotels, restaurants and bars are located, especially the surroundings of Suecia and El Bosque offer all the colors of nightlife. The monument built for Atatürk and praises him is also located in this new and beautiful part of the city.

Eating and drinking

Although traditional Chilean dishes consist mostly of seafood, there are many restaurants serving international cuisine in the kette. Chilean cuisine is accompanied by Chilean wines and a national drink, pisco, in the city, where a Chilean food style called Crillo has been created with the influence of French cuisine on Chilean cuisine. In cafés con piernas, a café culture unique to Santiago, only female waiters serve in bikinis. In addition, wine tours are organized to the city to taste the wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
