Transportation from the City Center to Saint Lucia Airport
Saint Lucia is a tropical island country located in the Caribbean. Its capital and largest port is the city of Castries.
There are two airports on the island. One of them is Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in the north of the island. This airport is the country's main airport and international flights land here. The other is the George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) at the south end. Because the runway of this airport is parallel to Vigie Beach, it is also known as Vigie Airport by the locals. Planes from other islands in the Caribbean and low-budget airlines land here in general.
The most economical way to get to Hewanorra International Airport from the city center is to take the number 2 bus, which departs from here. This bus starts its journey from Castries stop and ends at the Vieux Fort stop at the airport. Since the distance between them is 60 km, this journey takes about 1.5 hours. You can pay the fare to the driver and in cash. Unlike many other Caribbean islands, you have to pay in local currency here.
Apart from this bus, you can use a taxi or private transfer. You can take a taxi you see from the road, or you can ask your hotel to call a taxi for you. This is not a very economical option as the distance you will travel is about 60 km.
To get to the airport, you can also use a private transfer service that you can book through your hotel or online. If you are a large family or group, this service may even become an economical option.
George F. L. Charles Airport is only 4 km from the city center. Since you do not have any public transportation facility to go to this airport, you should use a taxi or private transfer to go to this airport.
Transportation from Fort de France Airport to the City Center
Fort de France, officially known as Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport, is the main airport of the French overseas territory of the island of Martinique. Although this is another country, it is actually a part of France. However, even if you have a Schengen visa obtained from the French Consulate, you still need to obtain a Martinique visa.
Although the distance between the city center and the airport is only 7 km, there is no public transport operating in this direction. The easiest way to get to the city center is to take a taxi. You can see the taxi rank as soon as you exit the D gate on the arrivals floor. All vehicles here are official and all have taximeters. You pay the day rate for taxis between 06:00 and 19:00, and the night rate after 19:00.
Another way to call a taxi is to use the official taxi app called 972 Taxi. Since this app is recommended on the airport's official page, it can be considered reliable.
You can also see the minibuses, which is a common practice in the Caribbean, at Fort de France Airport. Since these minibuses are usually minivans, they take off when they take 8 or 9 passengers. There are no specific stops, just tell the driver where you want to get off. If you are carrying a very large suitcase, they may ask you to take a taxi instead of a minibus. Dolmuses operate only during the daytime and without a specific timetable.
You can arrange a private transfer from your hotel or online. Thus, when you get off your plane, you will be greeted by someone holding your name and you can go to the city center effortlessly.
Renting a car is also a good option, as there are many places to see in Martinique and the infrastructure of the island is also very good. You can find the offices of many car rental companies, including reliable companies such as Avis and Hertz, at the airport. You need to pay attention to the car rental agreements in all conditions.
