Oran, also known as Oran, located on the Mediterranean coast in northwest Algeria, is also the center of the Province of Oran. Oran, which carries traces of many civilizations and cultures with its past ranging from Andalusians to Carthaginians, from Spaniards to Ottomans and French, is 450 km from the capital city of Algiers.
The name of the city is thought to be derived from the word "Wahran", which is believed to be the protector of the city in mythology and means "two lions" in Arabic. Algerians call it "Wahran el Bahia", which is used today to mean "The Beautiful Ratio".
Date
The city, which was founded in 903 with its roots dating back to the 2nd century BC, was occupied by Spain, which completed the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 1509 and started to seize the Arab-Muslim settlements on the Berber coast. Despite the fact that Turkish sailors such as Oruç Reis, Barbaros Hayrettin and Turgut Reis recaptured the cities in the hands of the Spanish, Oran, which continued its resistance, became Spain's most important base in North Africa in the 16th century, under the name of Vahran. It was conquered by the Ottomans in 1708 and joined the Pasha of Algeria. Although it changed hands between Spain and the Ottoman Empire for short periods after this date, the French, who captured Algeria in 1830, took the city and put an end to the Ottoman rule there. The Algerian city of Oran is located in the northwest of the country, right on the Mediterranean coast. In addition to being an important port city, it is also the center of the region in terms of monetary and cultural activities. There are three universities in Oran, a city equipped with very modern facilities.
