Date
Founded in 823, the city was named "Mashhad", meaning "place of martyrdom", after Imam Reza. The holiest city in Iran, Mashhad is a city where Iranian Shiites flock to be pilgrims, as the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth of the Shiite imams, is located here. Today, it is the country's second largest city after Tehran.
Places to visit
Located in the northeastern corner of the country, in a mountainous region called Khorasan, Mashhad is a very touristic city compared to Iran in general.
Imam Reza Shrine, where all roads are connected in Mashhad, is the place where Imam Reza, the eighth of the 12 imams, was poisoned to death and buried. At the same time, the visitors pray in two rows in the tomb area surrounded by golden railings of the shrine, whose magnificent golden dome gleams, which largely determines the development of the city.
There are many sacred structures with historical and artistic value next to the tomb. Apart from Iran, Shiites from Yemen, Iraq, India and Pakistan are also among the regular visitors of the shrine. In Mashhad, which hosts 12 million visitors every year, you can enter the tomb after a meticulous search at the entrance. It is strictly forbidden to bring cameras, mobile phones and any bags inside. You can leave your cameras and phones in your safe in the locked cabinets at the entrances.
The Central Museum, which is the largest of the three museums in the Imam Reza Tomb, has three floors. On the ground floor, there is a door that is gold-plated on one side and silver-plated on the other, and next to it is an 18th century prayer rug embroidered with thousands of small pearls. On the first floor, it is possible to see the originals of important works of Mahmud Farsciyan, one of Iran's great miniature artists. The Carpet Museum, whose most popular piece is "The Carpet of the Seven Beloved Cities", is the second museum in the tomb. It is said that 10 thousand people worked on the construction of the carpet and it was completed by tying a total of 30 million knots in 14 years. The Quran Museum, which contains more than 100 manuscripts of the Quran, is the third museum of the tomb.
Goharshad Mosque is a Timurid building located south of the tomb. In the south-east corner of the area, there is a museum and library, and a section where Sheikh Bahai's Tomb is located. On the west side, there are the Parizad and Balasar Madrasahs. If you can go a little outside of Mashhad on the Tehran road, you can visit the Hadji Murat Tomb, and the Haji Rabi Tomb to the north and the inscriptions engraved by the calligraphy master Reza Abbasi.
The region, where the graves of thousands of martyrs who died in the Iran-Iraq war are located, and the grave of Haji Rabi, the 1st Imam of the Shiites, is located 4 km north of Mashhad. Built by Shah Abbas, this 8-cornered tomb was destroyed many times, but was repaired and opened to visitors. Nadir Shah's Tomb and Museum is also a relaxing and beautiful cultural tour destination surrounded by large parklands.
When you go 24 km in the direction of Nishapur, you will see the Tomb of Ferdowsi, the most important name of Iranian and world literature and the author of the Shahname. Summer places such as Torghabeh, Torogh, Akhlomod, Zoshk and Shandiz, which are places to visit in the city, are also located a little outside the city.
