Date
Graz, where the first written document appeared in 1128, was the capital of the Habsburg dynasty from 1379 to 1619. In the following years, the imposing structures of Italian architecture kept the Renaissance alive. Known as a city conquered by the Ottomans, Graz was visited by the Grand Vizier İbrahim Pasha during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. There is even a wooden statue of the Janissary hanging from the window in the Palais Saurau, which dates back to those times. It was occupied by Napoleon in 1809. Graz, which has the most beautiful examples of Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque architecture, with its romantic courtyards, artistic venues and magnificent buildings, was selected as the 2003 European Capital of Culture. A city full of culture with its operas, concerts, theaters, festivals, cultural and artistic events, Graz is home to the Graz Technical University, from which the famous scientist Nikola Tesla graduated.
Places to visit
The historical buildings on the right and left of the Mur River, which runs through the middle of Graz, the shade provided by the narrow streets, the tiny shops, the sounds of music rising from the cafes in the streets leave you alone with those unique beauties of nature and history. The mussel-shell-shaped space floating on this river connects the two regions. Lighting, especially at night, is a must-see. Graz's Old Town, which survived the Second World War without major damage, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This pedestrianized, bustling, labyrinthine narrow street stretches between the Mur River and the north-facing Scholossberg Hill. There are houses with colorful roofs, shops, restaurants and cafes in this area.
Hauptplatz is an area in the center of the Old Town with its geometric shaped square, market stalls and 17th and 18th century houses around it. In Luegu House, a 17th-century house, there is a wooden janissary statue hanging from the glass, with a machete in his hand and a turban on his head. It is a reflection of the hatred of the people of Graz towards the Turks. Stadtpark, also known as Town Park, stretches along the old walls that were demolished in the 19th century. Forum Stadtpark in the middle of it hosts artists.
Schloss Eggenberg Palace, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and was built by Emperor Frederick III in 1460 as a permanent residence in Gothic style; The Arnold Schwarzenegger Museum, built in 1806 and featuring objects from the story of his career; Schlossberg-Luftige Hohen, which was used as a shelter by the people of Graz to protect themselves from the Turks during World War I and offers the best view of the city; Uhrturm, which is the oldest building in the city and has been in operation since 1265; The Glockenturm, built by melting 101 cannons captured from the Ottomans and with a dungeon underneath; Between 1544 and 1546, the Great Water Cistern with a diameter of 3.5 meters, a depth of 16 meters and a volume of 900 thousand liters is among the places to visit in the city.
The structure, which is thought to have been built in the 1550s, was carved as an underground tunnel with a length of 94 meters to supply water from the Mur River to the castle and is called the Turkish Fountain because Turkish prisoners worked.
Kunsthaus Graz, which draws attention with its magnificent architecture in the Lendkai region; Roman Museum-Flavia Solva with Roman ruins known as Flavia Solva; Austrian Sculpture Park, known as the Austrian Sculpture Park; Mur Island-Murinsel, an artificial island shaped like an open clam shell in the middle of the Mur River, is the city's most popular attractions.
