Bergen
Bergen, the second largest city in the Hordaland Province on the southwest coast of Norway, is an international port city with the charm of a small town. Bergen, Norway's second largest city after Oslo, is a lush city with the country's hottest and rainy seasons due to the Gulf Stream. The city, which was the capital of Norway before Oslo, looks like a small and very cute port town.
Date
Bergen, which was the capital of Norway until 1229, was founded by King Olav Kyrre in AD. It was founded in 1070. Bergen, the gateway to the Norwegian fjords, which has been included in the Unesco World Heritage List in Norway, where fjords have an important place in its geographical identity, is the second most populous urban region in Norway. The city, whose history goes back 900 years, is located on the Bergenshalvøyen peninsula. One of the historical names of Bergen, surrounded by mountains on all sides, is "the city of seven mountains".
The fjord, which was formed by the filling of sea water in the valleys formed as a result of the glaciers carving the rocks during the ice age, enters 200 kilometers into the land in some regions of Norway. Hamsilos Fjord in Sinop, Turkey, is a miniature fjord with a length of 2 km.
Places to visit
Norway, one of the most livable countries in the world, is a city where its people live in prosperity with its nature, clean and attentive streets. Its fjords are truly natural wonders. Starting from Bergen, located in the west of the country, is the right choice to go on fjord excursions. Hanseatic Houses, consisting of streets decorated with colorful wooden houses, are the traditional face of Bergen. There are many cafes and restaurants and a magnificent fish market to discover in the back streets of this charming city, almost everywhere on the beach.
You can start exploring Bergen by walking through the streets with pointed roofs and colorful northern houses. The Fish Market, which was established at the end of Vagen Bay, is one of the important points of the city. Dozens of fish and seafood products are sold in the market, whose original name is Fisketorget, and they are cooked and served instantly. Beyond the Fish Market is Torgalmenningen Square, which is closed to traffic. This is also a shopping street with all kinds of shops.
On the other side of the square, where various street artists are located, is the historical Bryggen District, where Hanseatic Houses built by Hanseatic Merchants for warehouse, office and accommodation purposes are located. These structures, which are on the Unesco World Heritage List, have been rebuilt even though they have been damaged many times. Wood is no longer allowed in Bergen, with the exception of the Hanseatic Houses, against the risk of fire. On the lower floors of Hansa Houses, there are shops selling touristic goods. There is also an open-air museum, called Gamble Bergen, where all the old houses are built and the old lifestyle is revived.
Bergen, which is a very interesting place due to its location, should definitely not be returned without climbing the Floyen and Ulriken Hills. In order to see the sun, which licks the horizon without ever setting, one has to go as far as Tromso, which is located in the northernmost part of Norway. Located inside the Arctic Circle, Tromso is about 1500 km from Bergen. Apart from the port in Vagen Bay, there is also a large port in the bay on the other side of the cape. The ferries going up to the north by entering the fjords depart from the port on this side. From here, it is possible to go to Sognefjord, which is the first thing that comes to mind when Bergen fjords are mentioned. Hardanger Fjord, which is within walking distance of the road, is another option.
Known as the last city inhabited by the Vikings, Bergen was the European Capital of Culture in 2000 and is the owner of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the oldest orchestra in the world. World-famous composer Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen.
Food & Drink and Shopping
Bergen cuisine, which has dozens of dishes from seafood, consists of shrimp, crab, haddock, red salmon, whale and venison. Cod fish dried in the wind, sandwiches prepared with seafood, and seafood pizzas are among the most consumed. Other than fish, their traditional dishes are "farikal" and their national drink is "aquavit", which is distilled from potatoes.
A little ahead of the Fish Market, you can shop at the shops under Torgalmenningen Square and the Hanseatic Houses, and buy small souvenirs unique to this area.
Transport
It is possible to reach Bergen, where there are non-stop flights from many cities in Turkey during the summer months, by connecting over Europe in the winter. You land at Bergen Airport in approximately 4-4.5 hours with airline companies such as Turkish Airlines, KLM, British Airways, Fin Air and Sas.
